A few weeks back we visited our friends at OEC Brewing in Oxford, CT to plan this year’s release of our annual collaboration beer, Fritz Walrus. Together, we made a few thoughtful adjustments to both ingredients and process, and we’re excited to share the results this week.
Over the past several years, we’ve brewed Fritz Walrus as a Dunkelweizen in the winter, while OEC makes a Hefeweizen in the summer. The project began when our mutual friend Joe Farrell of Walrus Alley in Westport, CT approached us both about collaborating on a locally brewed wheat beer he could offer year-round at his restaurant. From there, we developed the idea of a seasonal duality: a lighter, hoppier version for the warmer months and a darker, malt-forward version for the colder ones - each brewed in turn at our respective breweries.

Fritz Walrus is in the style of a classic Bavarian Dunkelweizen, clocking in at 5.6% abv. It pours a mahogany brown color with a tan head. Distinctive banana & clove notes are complemented by delicious chocolate-forward malt. The creamy soft texture from the abundant wheat and the dry toasty finish make this beer a delight to drink. A rarely brewed style that is extremely enjoyable - try it in our Taproom, at OEC or at Walrus Alley throughout the winter!
